Tiaro Landcare in Action: encouraging sustainable agriculture and conserving an endangered turtle.
ABOUT US
In common with the thousands of groups that belong to the Australian Landcare movement, our members share a common appreciation of our natural environment and agricultural production.
Based in the Tiaro district just 50 km inland from the iconic Fraser Island in south east Queensland Australia, Tiaro Landcare has a unique approach to Landcare. We have initiated a suite of on-ground conservation actions, established a support scholarship to encourage research, and have developed strong partnerships with local landholders, businesses and other organisations. Tiaro Landcare’s Mary River turtle conservation program has achieved world-wide recognition.
What do we do?
Tiaro Landcare focuses on two main projects.
Tiaro Field Day
Encouraging sustainable agriculture in our region. Tiaro Landcare is the driving force behind the biennial Tiaro Field day. This event provides up to date land management information to the local community and showcases agricultural products and services.
Mary River Turtle Project
Since 2001, our Landcare group has engaged in conservation and research projects to help secure the survival of the Mary River turtle, Elusor macrurus, found nowhere else but the Mary River.
